A Holistic Synergy: 109kg of Marine Debris Extracted as the Border-Based Foundation Bridged Grassroots Action and Global Sustainability Goals (doc. by OKL)
LibraryPost.com Canggu / As the first sun of 2026 rises over the Indonesian archipelago, the OKL Foundation, renowned for its literacy work in the remote borderlands of Malaka, East Nusa Tenggara, has officially launched its high-octane “Cornerstone Adventure 2026.” Eschewing a traditional quiet start to the year, the foundation’s leadership took to the shores of Batu Bolong Beach on Sunday, January 4th, 2026, spearheading a massive environmental intervention in collaboration with Trash Hero Canggu.
The initiative marks the beginning of a year-long odyssey aimed at integrating environmental stewardship, literacy, and social protection into a single, cohesive ecosystem of impact.

The Weight of Impact: 109 Kilograms of Change
In a grueling yet rewarding afternoon session, the joint task force of local activists and global travelers “crushed” their targets. The data from the Sunday sweep is sobering: a total of 109 kilograms of waste was diverted from the ocean. This included 24 kg of recyclable materials and a staggering 85 kg of non-recyclables, predominantly single-use plastics and micro-debris that threaten Bali’s fragile marine biodiversity.
“This is not just about cleaning a beach; it’s about ‘Environmental Literacy,'” says the representatives of OKL Foundation. “We cannot talk about empowering the next generation with books if the very environment they live in is suffocating under plastic. Our approach must be holistic. Today, we are saving the coastline; tomorrow, that same energy fuels our classrooms in the borderlands.”
The collaboration with Trash Hero Canggu serves as the tactical opening for the OKL Foundation’s 2026 roadmap, emphasizing that social welfare and environmental health are two sides of the same coin.

A Global Crossroads: Addressing the SDGs through Cross-Community Collaboration
The Cornerstone Adventure 2026 is designed as a masterclass in “Mutual Cooperation.” On the sands of Canggu, the OKL Foundation acted as a bridge, uniting social workers, activists, and volunteers from various continents. This multinational effort directly addresses the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically Goal 13 (Climate Action), Goal 14 (Life Below Water), and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).
Currently based in Bali, the OKL foundation is leveraging the island’s status as a global hub to build a robust social network. The focus remains clear: cross-community collaboration and personal development. By “upgrading self-quality” through these rigorous field activities, the foundation ensures its team is equipped with the grit and managerial expertise required to handle complex social challenges in Indonesia’s most remote regions.
The OKL Foundation’s presence in Bali serves a dual purpose. While the field action is immediate, the behind the scenes work involves forging alliances with international stakeholders, many of whom will follow the foundation’s journey to the Academic Conference at Oxford University this coming March.

The Borderland Vision: From Weaving Arts to Creative Farming
Despite the high-profile action in Bali, the OKL Foundation remains fiercely rooted in its original mission. What started as the “OKL Street Library” has evolved into a sophisticated machinery for social change. The foundation describes itself as a “holistic ecosystem driving literacy, social protection, and sustainable social entrepreneurship.”
Their portfolio is as diverse as it is deep, ranging from the preservation of traditional weaving arts (Tenun) to the implementation of creative farming techniques in Malaka, NTT. By linking these disparate fields, the foundation creates a safety net for single mothers, the elderly, and out of school youth.
As the “Cornerstone Adventure” gathers momentum, the world watches a local Indonesian initiative prove that grassroots movements can operate with the precision and professionalism of global NGOs. With the 109kg of waste now properly managed, the OKL Foundation turns its gaze toward its next milestone: bringing the voice of the Indonesian borderlands to the global academic stage in Oxford, United Kingdom.
